Acting 1 THTREMUS 101.002 (for non-majors)
First year course designed to set up a solid foundation and approach to acting. A mixed levels class, geared toward majors and non-majors. Focusing on physical and vocal awareness, the basics of character creation and script analysis, (objectives, beats and actions), through exercises, improvisation, rehearsal, and performance. Establishes an appreciation for the craft of acting by engaging as responsive, respectful, audience members.
Acting II THTREMUS 102.002 (for non-majors)
Intensive practicum focusing on the craft of acting. A continued exploration of the acting fundamentals needed for compelling, believable, and honest work through the exploration of immersive scene study. Primarily based on the teachings of Sanford Meisner—“Acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.”
Acting for the Camera: THTREMUS 110.001 (for non-majors)
Intensive practicum focusing on the craft of On-Camera Acting. An exploration of the acting fundamentals needed for compelling, believable, and truthful work, as the actor becomes more confident in front of a camera. The fundamentals of auditioning for TV, film, and Commercials. Beginning TV and Film scene work. Understanding the equipment and terms used in auditions, in the industry, and on-set.
Acting II THTREMUS 182.001 (BFA students)
Intensive practicum focusing on the craft of acting. A continued exploration of the acting fundamentals needed for compelling, believable, and honest work through the exploration of advanced, immersive scene study. Primarily based on the teachings of Sanford Meisner, emphasizing that the foundation of acting and/or emotional truth, is the reality of doing.
Acting for the Camera: THTREMUS 383.001 (BFA students)
An on-camera acting course expanding on foundational tools experienced in THTREMUS 101 and THTREMUS 182. A rigorous exploration of beginning on-camera acting techniques for television and film. Experiential learning by the implementation of continuity exercises, commercials, one-line auditions, and audition scenes, utilizing commercial and television copy. The final scene is an abbreviated scene study. Understanding that making something happen in the audition room and on-set is more important than “getting it right.” An in-depth examination of terms used in film and television production. An on-camera acting course expanding on foundational tools experienced in THTREMUS 101 and THTREMUS 182. A rigorous exploration of beginning on-camera acting techniques for television and film. Experiential learning by the implementation of continuity exercises, commercials, one-line auditions, sitcom, and audition scenes, utilizing commercial and television copy. The final scene is an abbreviated scene study. Understanding that making something happen in the audition room and on-set is more important than “getting it right.” An in-depth examination of terms used in film and television production. This class is geared towards the demands, rigors, and expectations of the entertainment industry.
Acting for the Camera: THTREMUS 484.001 (BFA seniors)
Intensive practicum focusing on the craft of On-Camera Acting. A continued exploration of the acting fundamentals needed for compelling, believable, and truthful work. Advanced understanding that making something happen in the audition room and on-set is more important than “getting it right.” Advanced understanding of how the internal monologue is crucial to performance and storytelling. Developing a keen and thoughtful grasp of making informed choices (while working or rehearsing), to uncover the truth of the moment and character. Sharing work that is connected, truthful, and personal, through auditioning, TV and film performance. This class is geared towards the demands, rigors, and expectations of the entertainment industry.
MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Acting I: THR 101
First year course designed to set up a solid foundation and approach to acting. Focusing on physical and vocal awareness, the basics of character creation and script analysis, (objectives, beats and actions), through exercises, improvisation, rehearsal, and performance. Establishes an appreciation for the craft of acting by engaging as responsive, respectful, audience members.
Acting II: THR 201
Intermediate acting class. Approaching acting through the work of Sanford Meisner with a focus on character development and script analysis. A strong focus on realism and realistic acting choices, as opposed to a broad “performance”, style acting. An intensive course with a significant amount of time spent on getting actors out of their heads– simply focusing on listening and responding. An exploration in given circumstances, realistic- almost “cinematic” behavior, objectives, and inner monologue- the power of living in-between the lines. The objectives of the class are achieved through scene study, rehearsal, and presentations of works by contemporary playwrights.
Topics in Acting/Directing I – On-Camera Acting: THR 204
An on-camera acting course expanding on foundational tools experienced in THR 101 and THR 201. A rigorous exploration of beginning on-camera acting techniques for television and film. Experiential learning by the implementation of continuity exercises, commercials, one-line auditions, and audition scenes, utilizing commercial and television copy. An in-depth examination of terms used in film and television production.
Movement Studio I: THR 207
A demanding movement course for actors. Developing physical awareness by strengthening and expanding range of motion for emerging performers. Experience and practice in composition and performance through expressive movement. Developing characters through observation, physical exploration, animal imagery, and emotional connection. Laban, Alexander Technique, physical improvisation, and mask work.
Topics in Acting/Directing II – On-Camera Acting : THR 304
On-camera acting course expanding on foundational principals explored in THR 204. An in-depth scene study class. Advanced study of extended TV and film auditions, green screen techniques and scene work. A focus on developing a heightened sense of inner monologue and subtext. Advanced understanding of terms used on-set in TV and film.
THR 304 and STA 472 – (Collaboration):
Collaborative section taught with Peter Glendinning, Art, Art History, and Design. Photography students shot headshots using actors from THR304. Exploration using studio and natural light, creating professional head shots. Exploration of relationship between actor and photographer in achieving a desired result that can help in branding and marketing.
THR 304 and ENG 335 – (Collaboration):
Student film directors from Film Studies partnered with actors from THR304. Short films were created exploring the relationship between actor and director. Creating a common vocabulary, fostering communication to achieve the director’s vision and a strong, connected performance for the actor.
Directing: THR 341
Introduction to directing for the stage. Concentrated instruction on skills used to transform a script into live theatre. Interactive workshop in directing and incorporating technical and design elements for onstage production. Hands-on practice in effectively blocking (staging) and communicating with actors. Specific focus in understanding and communicating the story being told- storytelling.
Topics in Acting/Directing III –Creating Content: THR 404
A media acting practicum. An in-depth, interdisciplinary course, developing techniques implemented in THR 204 and THR 304. A strong emphasis on new media, focusing on advanced level acting values and storytelling. An exploration in conceptualizing ideas/projects and developing skills as a writer, producer, director, actor, editor and collaborator. An evaluation of creative, technical, and practical aspects of filmmaking with the capability of working as an artist in a competitive global environment. The short films created begin to define the vision and aesthetics of the student as an artist, filmmaker, and storyteller.
Special Topics / Integrated Media Arts: CAS 496 (Collaboration)
Theatre2Film Project. Creating a feature film, from preproduction, filming, to postproduction. This course is designed for students taking leadership positions as producers, directors, editors, directors of photography, art directors, audio mixers/editors. The completed feature film premieres during the summer at the Traverse City Film Festival, the East Lansing Film Festival, and a variety of national film festivals. (Four feature films in total)
Acting Practicum -On-Camera: THR 801
Graduate level media-acting and filmmaking practicum. Advanced level on-camera techniques for auditioning and performing in television, film, and new media. Collaborative exploration of media acting using digital video to produce original work. Experience in writing, shooting, and editing short films providing tools to empower working actors.
Acting Practicum –Scene Study: THR 801
Intensive scene study focusing on the work of Sam Shepard and Harold Pinter. Advanced level-- emphasis on inner-monologue, given circumstances, objectives, and connection. Warm-ups and class exercises enhance the relationship to partner, utilizing this exploration in scene work. The focus is a heightened connection to a scene partner, tracking nuanced changes in behavior that would dictate changes in the actor dynamic and the scene. The goal is to stay invested in the moment and scene partner, allowing the scene to evolve/change during rehearsal and performance.
GLENDALE COLLEGE
Acting and Improvisation: LS 121
Mixed level acting and improvisation class. Exploring improvisational techniques based on exercises and teachings of Viola Spolin; saying “yes” while cultivating listening skills and spontaneous responses. Creating character through strong physical and vocal choices. Identifying objectives, beats and actions in a scene.
Improvisation: LS 220
Mixed level beginning improvisation class designed for older students with disabilities. The participants were dealing with physical and neurological degenerative disorders. We focused on engaging students in warm-ups, games, and basic improvisational exercises to help with physical mobility and mental stimulation. This class was flexible based on student attendance and personal limitations.
LANSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Building a Character THEA 120
Exploring the foundational elements of creating characters that have depth, purpose, and dimension. Primarily using the work of Sanford Meisner students unravel the mystery of character work by examining given circumstances, character history, mapping of play, overarching objective, and internal monologue.
On-Camera Acting THEA 150
A rigorous on-camera acting course examining basic on-camera acting techniques for television and film. Experiential learning, utilizing professional copy and scripts. An exploration of commercials, one-line auditions, audition scenes, and scene study. And ab in-depth examination of terms used in film and television production. Learning outcomes based on industry standards and expectations.
Directing THR 210
Introduction into directing for the stage. The curriculum retooled for the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus shifted to concentrated research based on the playwright, time period, socio-economic factors, and the characters. The final project culminated in a video pitch to designers and stage manager, utilizing key topics of the research, with thoughts and images about the essential elements and themes of the play.
Introduction to Theatre THR 120
Introducing students to the elemental aspects of the theatre. The origins, history, and evolution of theatre, and the key players throughout time. An examination of the specific duties of those who create live theatre. Experiential learning exercises in acting, directing, design, and play analysis, giving students a broader understanding and respect for the many incarnations of the theatre.
Beginning Acting: THR 120
Introduction to the craft of acting. Providing a foundation in the process of creating a character through voice, movement and script analysis. Developing skills and confidence as an actor through theatre games, monologues, and scene study.
Voice and Speech: THR 130
Introduction to the principles of voice and speech for actors. Strengthening the voice as an instrument and maintaining proper breathing for successful vocal production based on the work of Kristin Linklater and Edith Skinner. Exploring pronunciation using the techniques of Non Regional Stage Standard (NRSS).
Movement: THR 141
Introductory course in movement for actors. The goals; increasing strength, flexibility, and physical awareness. Developing characters through observation, physical exploration, animal imagery, and emotional connection.
Stage Combat: THR 160
Introductory stage combat. Fundamentals of fight choreography including hand-to-hand, quarter staff, rapier/dagger, and broad sword combat for safe and dynamic fight sequences. Advanced Acting: THR 233
Advanced level acting. Performance-based intensive acting course. Systematically approaching script analysis by focusing on objectives, actions, and beats. Strong emphasis on inner monologue.

Conceived the Theatre2Film Project and sought out faculty collaborators within the university.
Directed the play version of three Theatre2Film projects. I mentored students during writing process,
theatrical production, filming, and post-production. Premiered as an official selection at the Traverse
City Film Festival from 2015 – 2018.
*The Theatre2Film project consistently made a conscious commitment to diversity and inclusion. Diversity in casting and production roles, especially in the promotion of women in historically underserved positions in the film industry- Directors, Writers, Producers, and Directors of Photography. Every film centered on a female protagonist.
